La Mama Gata

Después de casi 5 meses sin verla, hoy ha aparecido en el jardín la madre de nuestros gatos.  Y estaba guapísima, con una piel bonita y forrada como la tienen los gatos en invierno.  ¡Y tan cariñosa como siempre!.  Ha sido como un regalo de Navidad, ya que estábamos preocupados de que le hubiera pasado algo.

Today, after nearly 5 months without seeing her, the mother of our cats has showed up in the garden. She was very pretty with a beautiful thick fur, dressed for the winter.  She was as loving and friendly as ever.  It is like a Christmas present to us, to confirm that she is ok, and nothing wrong has happened to her.

Cazando un pato

El lavabo sigue siendo una fuente de distracción para los gatos.  Sin llegar a meterse del todo, a ellos les gusta mojar un poco las patas, intentar agarrar al pato y sacudirse. ¡Véase cómo queda el espejo!

The sink continues to be a source of fun for the cats.  Without getting into the water, they love to wet the tips of their paws, try to catch the duck, and then shake the water off their paws leaving the mirror all stained with water drops. 

Relaciones Felinas

Las relaciones entre Lucas y Rufus son normalmente cordiales, pero a veces se enredan en peleas sin importancia.  En este vídeo, Lucas acicala a Rufus hasta que le despierta !

Lucas and Rufus have a friendly relationship, but sometimes they end up in fights with no consecuences.   In this video, Lucas grooms Rufus and wakes him up!

Orígenes de Lucas

Por casualidad vimos en el veterinario un poster con distintas razas de gatos.  Existe una raza llamada "Van Turcos" porque provienen del Lago Van en Turquía.  Nos llamó la atención ya que en la foto donde se mostraba un ejemplar de esta raza había un gato muy parecido a Lucas.  Es por ello que comencé un "proyecto de investigación" en este tema.  Para ver los resultados, ver el vídeo siguiente: 

LUCAS´ORIGIN

By chance we saw at the veterinarian a poster with different breeds of cats.  There is one called "Turkish Van" because they come from Lake Van in Turkey.  It stroke us that the cat shown in the poster was very similar to Lucas.  So, I started a very thorough research on this subject!!.  To see the results, see the following video:

La pata de Lucas actúa como antifaz de Rufus, para que éste pueda dormir bien....

Para mi cumpleaños, me han regalado "un juguetito" para los gatos.  Lucas lo ha recibido sin problemas, metiéndose de lleno a jugar con el desde el primer momento.  Sin embargo Rufus, que es más miedica y un poco cobarde, ha tardado más en adaptarse al nuevo objeto.  Pero ahora, lo disfrutan muchísimo y juegan todo el rato

I have received a present for my recent birthday that  happens to be a toy for the cats.  Lucas has approached it without a problem, playing with it from the start.  Rufus however, being a lot more fearsome and a bit coward, has taken his  time to get used to it.  But now, both of them are enjoying and playing with it all the time.

Haciendo la cama

Este es uno de los momentos más divertidos para Lucas y Rufus.  No tanto para quien tiene que hacer la cama....

La Piscina

Hace mucho calor, y lo único que se me ocurre es ponerles un barreño con agua para que se refresquen.

It is very hot and the only solution I find is to fill a basin of water for them to cool down.

La Goma Elástica

Una sencilla goma, como las que traen los espárragos que compro en la frutería, es una fuente de diversión que les dura un buen rato.  A veces se pelean entre ellos para conseguir la goma, y casi siempre es Rufus quien gana y se la lleva.  Pero esta vez, es Lucas el vencedor y alardea de ello mientras Rufus le mira jugar con la goma.

The Rubber Band

A simple rubber band, like the one that ties up a bundle of asparagus one can buy at the market, is a source of play that usually lasts for a while.   Sometimes they fight for it and normally Rufus is the winner that runs away with the band.  But this time, Lucas won and he is boasting on his success while Rufus is watching Lucas play with it.

La Caja

Not quite like MARU the japanese cat, but Lucas & Rufus also enjoy playing with boxes !!

El Grifo / The Faucet

Las gotas y el chorrillo de agua que caen del grifo son una fuente de diversión inmediata para Lucas.  Con sus patas, quiere "cazar" el agua que cae y no hace más que empaparse más y más.  Luego se sacude y ¡¡ pone todo el espejo perdido de agua !!

The water drops and trickle from the faucet are always subject of amusement for Lucas.  He tries to "hunt" the water drops with his paws only to get his fur drenched.  Afterwards, he shakes his body and leaves the mirror stained with water !!

La Casa es de los Gatos

Un experimentado dueño de una gata nos ha advertido de que los que tenemos gatos acabamos viviendo en sus casas.  Es decir, que la que era nuestra casa, se convierte ahora en la suya y son los humanos los que tenemos que adaptarnos a esta nueva circunstancia. Pues nada más cierto.  Por las mañanas, cuando tenemos que utilizar el lavabo (o los lavabos, tenemos dos), nos encontramos con que están ocupados.  Y muchas veces nos vemos obligados a lavarnos los dientes en el fregadero de la cocina.

A longtime owner of a cat has informed us that those who adopt cats as companions, end up living in their houses.  That is, what used to be our house, has become our cat´s.  And it is us, humans, who must adapt to this new circumstance.  Well, this seems to be true.  Every morning, when we need to use the sink (or sinks, we have two baths), we find them occupied by our cats.  One in each sink.  And in many occassions, we end up using the kitchen sink to brush our teeth.

Limpieza de Cutis / Facial Service

Rufus recibe una limpieza de cutis de su hermano.  Lucas, toma un empeño tal en la faena, que a veces se extralimita y le corta las cejas.  Así pues Rufus tiene una cejas muy recortaditas.  Espero que no le empiece a cortar el bigote en próximas sesiones.


Rufus gets a full facial service from his brother.  Lucas is so thorough in the job that sometimes he goes way beyond the requested service and clips Rufus´ eyebrows too.  So it happens, Rufus has very short eyebrows!!.  I hope Lucas does not clip his moustache next.

Los Lunes al Sol / Mondays in the Sun

Lunes, martes, cualquier día es bueno para tumbarse en una silla al sol y meditar sobre la vida. Calentitos dentro de casa, Lucas y Rufus son ajenos al frío polar que tenemos en la calle (hoy es 7 de enero). Rufus ha elegido la plataforma para reposar, y aunque está a la sombra, disfruta del sol que entra a raudales por la ventana.

Mondays in the Sun
Mondays, Tuesdays, any day is perfect to sit on a chair in the sun, and meditate about life. Lucas and Rufus are warm inside the house, oblivious to the cold polar weather outside (today is January 7th). Rufus has preferred to lie on the platform in the shade, but you can tell he is enjoying the sunrays that pour inside through the windows.

Las gotas de agua / Drops of Water

Después de ducharme, Lucas queda fascinado con las gotas de agua que resbalan por la mampara.


After I take a shower, Lucas becomes fascinated with the drops of water that slide down the bath screen.

A Rufus le fascina ver de cerca esas figuritas y pelotitas que se mueven por la pantalla de la televisión. En esta ocasión, sigue muy de cerca un partido de tenis femenino. Otra veces, sigue los partidos de futbol.

Rufus gets fascinated by the little figures and little balls that move around the TV screen. This time he is watching closely a women´s tennis match. Other times, he follows soccer games.

La Merienda / The Snack

A nuestros gatos les encanta el fiambre, y muy de vez en cuando, les damos un poco como refuerzo positivo cuando se portan bien.  Que no es muy frecuente, dicho sea de paso.  Y Rufus se queja siempre muy lastimeramente cuando se acaba la merienda. Pero a nosotros nos da la risa oirle maullar así.

Our cats love to eat cold cuts, and very sporadically, we use is as positive reinforcement after they have behaved well (or similar).  This does not happen often, though.  Rufus always complains when the snack is over, meowing mornfully.  But we find him hilarious, and we laugh a lot at him.

Lavado Fraternal II

A Rufus (el tigre), siempre le ha gustado chupetear y lavar a su hermano Lucas. Cuando tenían un mes y medio, Rufus y Lucas estaban casi siempre juntos. Con 3 meses, siguen mostrando el mismo afecto mutuo.

Rufus (the tiger) has always liked to lick his brother Lucas. When they were 1 1/2 months old, they were hanging around together all the time. When they are 3 months old, they continue to show the same fondness for each other.

En la librería / On the bookshelf

Para desgracia nuestra, nuestros felinos han encontrado una nueva diversión:  jugar con los diccionarios y otros libros en el estante más bajo de nuestra librería.

La Thermomix

La Thermomix sirve para algo más que para cocinar. Nosotros la usamos para pesar a nuestros gatos.  Este vídeo fue tomado hace ya tiempo. Ahora Lucas y Rufus pesan ya más de 3 kilos (cada uno claro) y ya no podemos usar este aparato.

The Thermomix is used for something else than cooking. We use it to weigh our cats. This video was taped some time ago.  Now both Lucas and Rufus weigh more than 3 kilos (each, of course) and we cannot longer use this machine.

Los primos mayores de Lucas y Rufus

Bizcocho y Parrales son los gatos de mi hermano y su familia.  Por lo tanto, son primos de nuestros gatos, Lucas y Rufus.


Bizcocho es un gato de raza "Bosque de Noruega", y por tanto pertenece a la nobleza gatuna. Parrales es un adoptado del pasado verano. Era un joven gato hambriento que deambulaba por las calles y que conquistó a esta familia que le acogió y le cuidó. Por tanto Parrales es un plebeyo. Pero ambos disfrutan de una excelente vida en una familia que les adora.

Bizcocho and Parrales are my brother´s family cats.  Therefore, they are cousins of our cats, Lucas and Rufus.


Bizcocho is a "Norwegian Forest" breed, and therefore belongs to the cat nobility. Parrales is an adopted cat,from last summer. He was a young hungry cat that wondered about on the streets looking for food and affection. He gained the love and care of this family that took him in and cared for him. Therefore, Parrales is a commoner. But both enjoy a good life in a family that adores both of them.

El Pedestal / The Platform

Lucas suele subirse a la plataforma para contemplar "el mundo" desde las alturas. Y cabe bien, sin apreturas. Pero esta vez, parece no encontrar la postura, e incluso parece que no hay sitio para él. En otra toma anterior (se ve que son más pequeños), Rufus se ha acomodado detrás de él, y su rabo asoma por delante de Lucas.

Lucas usually climbs up to the platform to watch "the world" from above. And there is plenty of space for him. But this time, he seems to have difficulties finding the right position, and it looks like there is not enough room for him. In another previous take (they are much smaller), Rufus is comfortably laying behind him, with his tail sticking out in front of Lucas.

Lucas, la mopa felina

A Lucas le encanta subirse a la mopa y que le paseen por la casa.  A veces él mismo hace de mopa y limpia el suelo con su cuerpo.

Lucas enjoys climbing on to the mop and travels this way around the house.  But sometimes he himself becomes the mop and cleans the floor with his body.

Lucas el chupón

Desde que le trajimos a casa, Lucas ha demostrado una afición tremenda por chupetear nuestra piel.  Allá donde encuentra una mano, un brazo, etc., él la busca, se pone a chupar ruidosamente, ronronea fuertemente y  a la vez empieza a mullir con las patas de delante, hincando suavemente las uñas en la piel. No he encontrado chupetes gatunos aunque los he buscado, para sustituir a nuestras manos.  Creo que es un hábito que ha tomado que le da seguridad y en cierta forma placer.

Since we brought Lucas home, he has developed a consistent "hobby" which consists on sucking our skin.   Wherever he finds a hand, an arm, etc… he starts to suck in a very noisy way, purrs heavily, and starts kneading with his front paws, sinking slightly his claws on the skin.   I have looked for a “cat pacifier” as a replacement of our hands, but I have not found it.  I believe this habit brings him comfort and a sense of security.

Dulces sueños / Sweet dreams

Estas fotos son de hace tiempo, pero tenía hecho el vídeo y quería subirlo a este blog.  Lucas y Rufus están ahora mucho más grandes, están en la fase de adolescentes y son terriblemente juguetones.
